Sun tanning is a process of skin where in the skin pigment called Melanin increases in the skin after exposure to Sun leading to show a darkening effect. This is a natural process of skin defence mechanism, in the process the exposed parts of your body start changing the colour. The UV rays from the sun cause skin to get into a protection mode. The melanin that is present in the skin starts a mechanism which stops the UV radiation from causing further damage to the skin. The melanin acts as an umbrella this occurs in all skin cells when exposed to sun. Therefore, tanning is visible in the exposed parts of the body.
The harmful sunrays that are called ultraviolet rays are of two types, Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB). Both these rays are responsible for Suntanning, which increases the melanin production and therefore results in dark skin. Prolonged sun exposure can also cause further skin complications leading to skin damage like sunburns and pre-mature skin ageing. In worse case it can also lead to skin cancer.
To ensure that your skin is taken good care and reduce the effects of sun tanning by using an appropriate sunscreen lotion on the exposed areas of skin. The sunscreens will help in blocking or lowering the effect of the harmful UVA and UVB sunrays. There are quite a few sunscreens available with SPF numbers higher the SPF better the protection of the skin.
One should start using Sunscreen irrespective of a sunny day or not, either indoors or outdoors. A regular use of a sunscreen with a minimum 30SPF will ensure that your skin is getting the protection it needs. You can start by applying a good moisturizer leave the skin to absorb the same for a while. Followed by applying a sunscreen at-least 20 mins before stepping out in the sun. The more the protection the better skin care regime you are following, do not forget to carry your umbrella or a hat during a sunny day to ensure your skin is not directly exposed to Sun. You should also ensure that you re-apply sunscreen after 3-4 hours depending on how long you are spending time outdoors.
